Roger Ebert’s TEN GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME

In 1991 film critic Roger Ebert made a list of what he considered the 10 greatest films of all-time. The list is in alphabetical order. Ebert always appeared to be suspicious of such lists but he relented, naming a list of classics, later visual masterpieces of New American cinema, documentaries and international art-house including a relatively obscure entry of Yasujiro Ozu (best known worldwide for Tokyo Story).  Nice to see 28 Up listed, one of Michael Apted’s ground breaking documentary series and that’s not Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate but Errol Morris’s (The Thin Blue Line) late 70s documentary about pet cemeteries.

    • Casablanca
    • Citizen Kane
    • Floating Weeds
    • Gates of Heaven
    • La Dolce Vita
    • Notorious
    • Raging Bull
    • The Third Man
    • 28 Up
    • 2001: A Space Odyssey

All-time favourite science fiction films

In 2008 New Scientist magazine polled staff and readers to find their favourite sci-fi films. Below is the top 5. Serenity is perhaps a surprising choice and maybe there are stronger classic examples of sci-fi than Forbidden Planet, but it is lauded as a precursor to the modern space exploration films we now enjoy.

1. Blade Runner
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Serenity
4. Forbidden Planet
5. The Matrix
