Michael Atkinson is an American writer, poet and film critic. He has written widely on film and culture, in Sight & Sound, The Village Voice, The Guardian, Film Comment, The Believer, In These Times, The Criterion Collection, Rolling Stone, The Progressive, Spin, Maxim, The Boston Phoenix, Details, Moving Image Source, IFC.com, TCM.com, Movieline, The Poetry Foundation, Chicago Reader, LA Weekly, The Stranger, The American Prospect, Baltimore City Paper, Modern Painters, and other publications. In 2006 Atkinson was one of 177 critics from around the world who picked their best 10 films from the 21st century for the BBC’s 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century (2016). BBC Culture’s 100 greatest foreign-language films

Over the last three years BBC Culture has been carrying out critics’ polls, to find the 100 greatest American films, the best films of the 21st Century and the greatest comedies ever made, and now they’ve turned their thoughts to the best world cinema. They’ve polled 209 critics from 43 countries and published the top 100 films on the 30th October 2018. There has been some noise in the press surrounding the lack of many female directors and that 21st century film is not too well represented.

BBC’s 100 Greatest American Films

In July 2015 BBC Culture polled 62 film critics from around the world to determine the 100 greatest American movies ever made. There are some surprising results with Gone With the Wind which placed 6th on AFI’s 2007 list only 97th on the BBC poll. This maybe that AFI list comes from the choices of the US industry rather than foreign critics.

For the purposes of the poll, an American film is defined as any movie that received funding from a US source. The directors of these films did not have to be born in the United States nor did the films have to be shot in the US. Each critic who participated submitted a list of 10 films, with their pick for the greatest film receiving 10 points and their number 10 pick receiving one point. The points were added up to produce the final list.

BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s Favourite Movies

In March 2011 BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s published a list of Favourite Movies compiled from the votes of listeners . In January 2011 listeners were invited to suggest choices and then in February an expert panel met to decide a shortlist of 20, before listeners votes that decided the order of the Top 20.

BBC’s Film 2000 Best Films of the Year

In December 2000 viewers of the BBC’s Film 2000 TV show voted for their best film of the year.
Ridley Scott’s ancient Roman epic Gladiator took over 40% of the votes to top the list. Viewers were able to vote by telephone and online before programme host Jonathan Ross revealed the results on the show. It was quite a year for Gladiator star Russell Crowe who also had the lead role in Michael Mann’s brilliant The Insider which was placed 10th.
