After reportedly studying over 47,000 movies, researchers at the University of Turin named the musical The Wizard of OZ the most influential. It took top spot after the researchers found it was the most referenced film in other movies and had the most related works. According to the study, the adaptation of Baum’s fantasy finished ahead of Star Wars, Hitchcock’s Psycho, 1930s classic King Kong and Kubrick’s visionary science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In 2010, the Toronto International Film Festival released its “Essential 100” list of films, which merged one list of the 100 greatest films of all time as determined by an expert panel of TIFF curators with another list determined by TIFF stakeholders. The list reads like a definitive guide to the best of world cinema.
Atom Egoyan is a Canadian stage and film director, writer, and producer. Egoyan made his career breakthrough with Exotica (1994), a film set primarily in and around the fictional Exotica strip club. Egoyan’s most critically acclaimed film is the drama The Sweet Hereafter (1997), for which he received two Academy Award nominations, and his biggest commercial success is the erotic thriller Chloe (2009). In March 2013 the Goethe-Institut together with Deutschland Radio Kultur and DIE WELT, placed a survey online for the EUROPE LIST project with the “aim… to make Europe tangible for many people while also creating a platform for them to shape their vision of a cultural Europe.” One of the survey’s questions was ‘What is the best European Film?’ 3379 people from Germany took part in the survey. The results, shown below, were published from June 2013.
In 2004 The New York Times published a book that listed the 1000 films that they consider the finest ever made. The book features a collection of original reviews by the critics of the paper, and the list encompasses movies of every conceivable genre, including musicals, dramas, comedies, foreign films and animated features. The films are listed in alphabetical order. In 2002 The National Society of Film Critics brought out the book “The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films”, edited by Jay Carr. It features 100 essays on the 100 Films. The essays look at the origins of the films, why the critics love them and their significance within the context of film history. The list is in alphabetical order. Published in the 2000 Edition of Maltin’s Movie and Video Guide, the list is in chronological order. The esteemed critic sticks to the classics and includes only includes two films from the 1980s and four from the 1990s.
