Batman Returns (1992)

Director: Tim Burton Cinematographer: Stefan Czapsky
 Batman Returns (1992) on IMDb

Burton needed the promise of  more creative freedom to persuade him to take the reins of his second Batman film. The sequel sees Batman (Michael Keaton) fighting a new foe in the form of the monstrous Penguin (Danny DeVito), who lives in the sewers and aims to kill all of Gotham City’s firstborn sons. He must also deal with Selina Kyle/Catwoman (a seductive Michelle Pfeiffer), the former secretary of businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), who seeks vengeance against Shreck for attempting to kill her to hide his own plans to bring the city under his control. Darker and more violent than the first film, Batman Returns is an entertaining showcase for the talents of Keaton who delivers as the brooding hero, a scene staling DeVito and Burton’s ability to produce remarkably original atmospherics.

Published in 2006, Peter Travers, movie critic for Rolling Stone, compiled a list of the 1,000 best films available on DVD. Peter Travers is an American film critic and journalist, who has written for People and Rolling Stone. Travers also hosts a celebrity interview show called Popcorn for ABC News. The Incredibles (2004)

Director: Brad Bird Cinematographer: Andrew Jimenez, Patrick Lin, Janet Lucroy
 The Incredibles (2004) on IMDb

Set in an alternate version of the 1960s, The Incredibles follows the Parrs, a family of superheroes, who, in accordance with a government mandate, are forced to hide their powers and live a quiet suburban life. However, Mr. Incredible’s desire to help people draws the entire family into a confrontation with a vengeful fan-turned-foe and his killer robot. Brad Bird moves slightly away from the normal Pixar formula but his dysfunctional family tale provides plenty of wit, a great deal of entertainment and some amazing animation. A sequel was released in 2018.

Addams Family Values (1993)

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld Cinematographer: Donald Peterman
Addams Family Values (1993) on IMDb

Sonnenfield’s comedy sequel sees the Addams family welcoming a new baby boy but then making the mistake of employing devious nanny (Joan Cusack). She pretends to fall in love with Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) and then marries him, intending to murder him for his inheritance. Meanwhile, the family teenagers, Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman), are none to happy about their new sibling and will stop at nothing to get rid of  him. While the first film did better business at the box office and was deemed a strong adaptation of the madcap TV series, Addams Family Value goes deliciously more macabre and satirical in its humour and was seen by many critics as a rare example of a sequel that is better than the original.
