Now here’s a curious list from Entertainment Weekly magazine. Described as the best American soundtracks it includes music from A Hard Day’s Night, Once Upon a Time in the West, Oliver! and others which are really not American films. It’s good to see some entries here where the film’s not been that well received but the soundtracks are excellent, such as Morricone’s stunning work for The Mission and John Barry’s beautiful score for Out of Africa.

In 1999 Time-Life Inc. published Entertainment Weekly’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. A good mix of classics from around the world with The Godfather and Citizen Kane once again at the top. In 2006, as part of the AFI 100 Years… series, the AFI unveiled its Greatest Movie Musicals list of the top musicals in American cinema. In a change to the majority of AFI lists in this series only the top 25 films are shown. It’s hard to question the placings on this list with Singin’ in the Rainm placed at no. 1, not just the greatest musical ever made but arguably one of the greatest films ever made.
